A quick read as dark as the Iceland landscape at Christmas holidays. Inspector Erlandur is doing his best to ignore Christmas and holes up in a metropolitan hotel for the duration of this story. A doorman who plays Santa for the hotel has been found in embarrassing circumstances in his tiny basement abode fully clothed in Santa costume. There are little in the way of clues or evidence and much of the police action is Erlandur mulling over the pieces from a room he takes at the hotel, in between

I'm getting surfeit on dark, Scandinavian novels for the present. I like the careful analysis, the insight into the foreignness that is Iceland; I savor the thrashings in Erlendur's mind. This one, and it might have been the same for others in the series, just went over the same material just too many times for my summer reading this year. I'll get back to Arnaldur at a later time.

I'm beginning to really like this author. His plots are a bit convoluted, but make sense and you learn a bit about Iceland and its inhabitants in each one. This one centers on a man who as a child was a boy soprano. When his voice deepened his life changed and not necessarily for the good.
