After my trip to London, I wanted to read famous books set in London. That is why I chose this one. Hmmm - I cannot imagine why this book is considered a classic because it was tedious, repetitive and generally dull. They actually made a movie of it - which if course I have to see. The two redeeming qualities were Colin Firth's voice on the audio version - which is so intoxicating and the prose which is actually very lovely. But the story, not my cup of British tea.

I don't know what page this was on because, listening to it, you don't know those things. There are so many lines in here I'd like to quote.
It's worth watching the movie for sexy Trevor Howard but the book is of course so much more and I was so sorry when I was finished.
(I like this narrator, Michael Kitchen, very much.)

A particularly excellent book, made more so with Firth's well-done narration - he brings a life to words that would have seemed a bit flat on the page. A thought-provoking set of ideas, but refreshingly without the ponderousness that would normally accompany them.
