I wasn't a fan of Gene. I liked the book but am not sure in would call it a classic. The ending was sad and it reminded me of Lord of the Flies ( just finished it with the 8th graders). I am still confused as to what actually transpired between Gene and Phinney in the tree that fateful day.

Not sure kids can relate to this as a coming of age story these days. Glad i finally read it - was banned at a TX school so it qualified as a banned book to read for a challenge.
