ahh, lisa see...and more chinese women going through hard times.
see weaves such rich, historical fiction filled with complex female relationships, i find i have a hard time walking away from the characters when the book ends.
while i have no idea of the accuracy of the time period portrayed, the story feels authentic due to the vivid descriptions of settings and daily tasks.

2.5. I DNFed this book twice before finally getting through the whole thing. I did not care for it. It’s really hard for me to read a book like this, with my modern Western feminism, and appreciate it for its historical and cultural value. I just want to shake the characters and tell them to stop. I thought this book was excellent! I love books about other cultures, and this book did not disappoint. It deals with women in China in the 19th century, and I thought the perspective it offers is excellent. It is mostly about the relationship between Lilly and Snow Flower, the two women who were united in order to procure better marriages. i never really got into this book. i guess it was a good story, but i didn't think it was that well written and i never really felt all that attached to the characters, which is important to me in a book like this. it was maybe a bit too much like every other novel i've read about women and their struggles and triumphs. nothing new or out of the ordinary.
