You can't help but wonder when you read a book on the holocaust, how people 'claim' (some don't believe it ever happen) they went through this - then turn around and do it to others (the Palestinians)...anyway, that was going through my head the whole time reading this.

I often find WWII stories challenging just by the sheer nature that they will be defined by death and suffering. In fact, Zusak takes on the character of death as his narrator. This choice, though it offered up a surprising (and refreshing) declaration of Death’s disagreement with war, felt a bit too gimmicky to me. And it seemed to me that Zusak moved in and out of Death’s point of view and often switched to a more readable 3rd person narration, so he dropped his shtick quite often. ...more

Beautiful sad little book. Great perspective and I'm glad it's from a German wwII perspective. Bit of a cop-out ending.
