Part II was disappointing. I don't need to be hit over the elderly Japanese Uncle's intolerance toward his gay nephew......We get it "forbidden love"....the next generation. Also didn't like the granddaughter. Won't even discuss the fertility shrine or the personal shoulder messager......detracts seriously from the story but were mercifully BRIEF.
I really liked the rest of the book, but 3 stars is about right for it. ...more

I enjoyed this book. It is about a Japanese woman who married a US soldier in occupied Japan in the 40's and comes back to America with him to raise a family. I really enjoy historical fiction, especially about Japanese women who come to America. I find WW II to be such an interesting period in history (albeit: a tragic one) and the cultural immersion fascinates me. This was a well-written read.
