This did not live up to its hype. I expected a marvelous creation unlike any other, but what I found was a really long picture book with text on some pages and murky drawings on other pages. The story involves a group of people refusing to tell each other anything. If only they had told each other what they knew, there would be barely a story at all! But instead what we get is:

No! You tell me what that is!
No! Tell me where you got that!

This book is a treasure house of all that is right about modern fiction for young people. It is straight forward and intelligent and inspiring. It is not over-the-top, it captures so much with good writing and beautiful illustrations. It is also the best of historical fiction across any age genre.

Reading this book is a total experience. It celebrates art and imagination and is appropriately about the movies. I read this just before watching the movie in 3D. The movie producers added some elements of humor and suspense to the story but the focus remains the celebration of the power of imagination. The movie was true to the spirit of visual beauty of the work. As far as plot and writing is concerned the book comes out somewhat light but it is still a fairly enjoyable and short journey.

Lovely illustrations! Brian Selznick is a genius :) I love how he combined the texts and the pictures into a whole complete story. I also love his picture descriptions of the Parisian life :) Can't wait to read the Wonderstruck!

It was nice enough -- I enjoyed the historical setting. Knowing I'm not the target audience, I'd say it's worth giving it a try with your kiddo.
