I really enjoyed The Postmistress by Sarah Blake. Set in 1940-41 in WWII-ravaged Europe and also a small town on Cape Cod that has yet to feel the effects of the war, The Postmistress tells the story of three different women. Blake does a lovely job of transitioning and even overlapping the voices, creating a superior story that draws the reader in. I did find this technique a bit confusing in the beginning; there are times when the voice changes from paragraph-to-paragraph. However, once I got ...more

I kind of wish Blake had cut back her story to focus on Frankie, who is by far the most compelling of the three women here - I found myself hoping for her sections and skimming through the others. A germ of a good idea here, but needed more development.

Story of people on both sides of the Atlantic during WW2. Very moving vignettes of the Jews in Europe as they try to escape danger and equally moving stories of everyday life in the US affected by a war so far away. I really enjoyed it.

Another WWII themed book. The interesting part of this one is that it deals with the period before the US entered the war and the senitments of thoseAmericans not yet involved as well as American news correspondents in the UK and Europe.

Dear Reader,
I wanted to write you a letter and tell you about this wonderful book I just read called The Postmistress. It takes place in the United States right before World War Two when some Americans believed they were safe and secure. The main character is Frankie, a reporter who is eager to tell Americans what is going on in Europe before America enters the war. Vivid descriptions of living through the bombings in London; riding the trains with hordes of people desparate to leave their homes in mainland Europe; and the hopelessness and death surrounding them.

nice premises, but a bit blah in the middle. and the title is a bit misleading, since the postmistress does not become the only center of the story. the world war background is nice though. and i like emma's character, although can not say the same to other characters in the book. ...more
