Claire Randall is vacationing with her husband Frank in Scotland after World War Two and trying to rekindle her marriage after many years apart. Claire is picking plants in a stone circle when she travels through a time portal and ends up in Scotland in the 1700's. Claire soon becomes involved in life of the time and finds herself attracted to Jamie Fraser. An extremely long book. I found myself shaking my head at some of the choices that the author made (like having the male lead experience a traumatic rape), and I didn't like the smug heroine particularly, but I did enjoy the historical setting and just the verve of this book. I don't think I will read on in the series.

This book has many of the attributes that I like in a book; an exciting plot, time travel, romance, is well written, seems well researched and is historical fiction. Why then, has this book been a real slog for me?
