Certain books are allowed to be less than perfect. For example, any book about librarians or book collecting or even writing is such a welcome publishing event that I give it some slack; just the mere fact that someone decided to choose these as subjects is enough to allow the author some latitude. Fiona Sweeney, the American librarian, in The Camel Bookmobile believes that books offer "vicarious tastes of infinite variety," and it is those vicarious tastes that she would like to bring to the plains of Africa with her. Another book you either love or hate, I guess. For me, the characters were flat, the pseudo romance plot not compelling and all the rich and interesting questions about literacy and reading and economics of education left unasked. Combine with pedestrian writing and you have a lovely ladies' book club read. Ugh.

Not quite what I'd hoped for - more of a sociopolitical commentary on cultural colonialism than a novel featuring such key elements as a workable plot, interesting characters, and description of some depth.
