This title was the July selection of
South Austin Spiritual Book Group.
Shaffer creates a sensitive, detailed and wondrous sense of place in this story. I found myself wanting to go to Guernsey as I closed the book and fell asleep at night. Not physically go there, but go there through the book, through the writing.
The characterization is imaginative and real at the same time--island characters are more likely to be eccentric b/c they don't have to answer to anyone and these fit the bill. I was o ...more

A cute book I listened as an audiobook during my commutes, I found this epistolary novel sweet and easy to digest. The five actors playing about ten roles gave the audiobook an old-time radio show feel.
As far as the story went, it was chick lit, though it spared us the descriptions of shoes. I have done this book great injustice by reading it over a very long period. In fact, I was halfway through it when I left it for over three months. In the interim I left Cape Town and moved to New York, started a new job and was trying to come to terms with homesickness and living in the big city. If it wasn't for these circumstances it could easily be one of those treats to be gobbled up in one sitting.
