This was an epistolary novel; that is to say, a book written in a series of documents (in this case, letters). It's hard to find books written in this style, and I think I now understand why. The concept for this book was inspired - the small island of Guernsey (the only part of England occupied during WWII) trying to recover from the effects of the war. Enjoyed the book. I liked reading the story from the perspective of letter writing. It seems to be a lost art. For such a deep subject matter, the book was light hearted, charming and again reiterated to me about human perseverance.
My mom was a small child in Denmark when Germany occupied her country within 24 hours. Even being a child and with what her family told her, she had similiar stories as this book. And just as a side note, when I visited Denmark, I danced a polka with a pig farmer - he ...more

A charming book, with wonderful characters and great humour. It was a lovely way to find out about something I knew very little about - The occupation of the Channel Islands during WW2. It's a quick read and I enjoyed it.

I know I won't be getting another book to read on the kndle app for iPhone. I wasn't enjoying it at all until about half way and then it suddenly flew past. I enjoyed the author's story too.
