What Members Thought

This book totally holds up as an adult. I'm sure I've read it as an adult, but it's been a while. I still love all the characters as much as I did when I was a kid and I still love the lessons it teaches about moral courage and standing up for what is right at risk of personal harm. I like the ways adults explain the German occupation to the kids in the book and I am continually impressed by the strength of those involved in the Danish resistance.

Ellary was reading this book for school so I read it along with her. This was a good introduction to the study of the Holocaust as it hit the important points but within a story intermediate kids could understand. I did show her the BrainPop video explaining the Holocaust so that helped her understand the story a bit more deeply. For such a difficult topic to understand I do think this was a good starting place. I should also check out a copy of "The Terrible Things" by Eve Bunting from the libr

This is a really short book about the trials of the Jews in Denmark, and how a white Danish girl had to help her neighbours and friends escape the clutches of the Nazi Germans. It is rather too simply written for me to say I really liked it, but I think it would be a good ('educational') book for the middle grades.

It's good, but not that remarkable. Lowry played with another element in war that is rarely written by children's author: how friendship can be used to fight the enemies in the war. The people in Denmark is so loyal with each other that the non-Jewish protected their Jewish neighbors and friends fiercely. What a beautiful portrait in the middle of the dark time of war. Too bad the story is too short! I wish there's more development of the characters and a bit more of conflict inside the book.
