I learned so much from this book. How maple syrup is produced and tapped, how water lilies get oxygen, a cedar tree's uses, what lichens are (!), why indigenous people grew corn, beans and squash together, and so much more. The book is a mix of traditional indigenous stories, science and personal musings on the environment and our culture's relationship to the earth. I stumbled upon this book and I’m glad I did. I enjoyed her beautiful descriptions of plants and the reciprocal relationships between people and plants. I also enjoyed the explanations of Native American traditions and stories. I loved the focus on gratitude and she told some delightful stories. There were a few times it got long-winded and occasionally I disagreed with her assessments, but generally it’s a beautiful book, especially for plant and nature lovers. 4 stars!
