I'm honestly not sure what all the fuss is about. This was fine. I cared enough about Rachel and Nick's love story to keep reading but there were way too many characters to keep straight (though I could see that working for a TV series) and so many catalogues of clothing and other material objects that I just got bored reading after a while. The book was just too long. I could easily detect the satire of the whole thing but nothing made me really laugh out loud.

Delightfully fluffy guilty-pleasure satirical novel about Singapore's crazy rich. It reminded me a lot of The Pursuit of Love. Both feature over-the-top characters whose repulsive disdain for those outside of their class somehow manages to be the springboard for the comedic element upon which the book deftly carries itself.

What a crazy book. Wealth vs. poverty. Differences in perception. Priorities all mixed up. This satire novel brings into focus the lives and thinking processes of excessively wealthy families in Singapore. I have seen this book around for a while, and wondered about the hype. Then I picked it up and started reading it, and was entranced. The story of Rachel and Nick, this book gives a glimpse into a world of wealth and privilege that can barely be imagined. Despite their wealth and all the trappings, the characters in this book are no better than anyone and often display their worst characteristics, which have little to do with the amount of money they have, but more so their degree of humanity. I need to visit Singapore to try all the food I just read about!! So you need snacks when you're reading this. I absolutely LOVED this books. I think is was nicely written, fast paced, interesting, and funny. People complaining about the novel being over the top - yeah, that's exactly what made it so entertaining!
I think my favorite part was just the description of Singapore. Nick's taking his girlfriend Rachel to Singapore for a friends wedding. Rachel didn't do her homework on what Nick's life ...more
