There are a lot of World War II novels, and I've read many of them from many angles and countries, but this one is something special. We get to hear the point of view of a teenage girl captured by the Japanese soldiers occupying Singapore. She was taken from her family to be held captive as a "comfort girl" . . . in a brothel. She was terribly abused, starved and controlled for several years.

This is such an important book with an equally important topic. There are not that many books about Singapore during and after the World War II, how Japanese occupation shaped the country and its inhabitants, and how Chinese immigrant lives turned upside down during and after the war.
The story about Wang Di and "comfort women", a part of history that is still rarely discussed, are written quite well, but the part about the current time, with Kevin who tried to find out about his family ...more
