The book starts strong with two girls disappearing. The rest of the book I didn't much like. Each month for the following year is covered with the story of a different woman in the region where the girls disappeared. The women are mostly rather tangentially connected to the missing girls. The stories for the most part were really dark and depressing, covering topics like domestic violence and rape. This was a wonderful reading experience for so many reasons it is set on the Kamchatka peninsula - which is a part of Russia so far east that if you went further east you would hit Alaska. Because it is a peninsula, it is very hard to get in and out of. The story begins as two girls ages 8 and 12 are abducted. Each chapter takes place in a successive month for the next year.
