The book starts strong with two girls disappearing. The rest of the book I didn't much like. Each month for the following year is covered with the story of a different woman in the region where the girls disappeared. The women are mostly rather tangentially connected to the missing girls. The stories for the most part were really dark and depressing, covering topics like domestic violence and rape. It took me a few chapters to begin to fully appreciate the accomplishments of this novel but by the end I was floored. The writing, the interwoven plot, the wonderful characterizations of women of different ages and different circumstances are exceptional for a debut novelist and the surprising setting of Kamchatka made the whole book extra special.

Such a good idea to write this.
