Oh. My god. Those last two chapters really take it out of you.

This story is so complex and rich with people weaving in and out of other people’s life stories. Just like in real life, they don’t always know when someone else in the room might be important to their life. There are so many heart breaks in life, big and small; so many mysteries, some answered and some never answered.

In the opening chapter of this book, two girls are abducted in Kamchatka. Each chapter takes places in a subsequent month and tells the story of another resident of the peninsula. Starting with the abduction of two small girls, this book takes us to Kamchatka, into a world very different and yet so like our own. The book is told in a sort of short story format, each story featuring someone somehow touched or affected by this kidnapping.

I have never read a story like this and was absolutely spellbound the entire time. I highly recommend this absolutely magical journey to the other side of the world.

Strange and beautiful, this mystery immerses you in the Siberian peninsula in Soviet Russia and, like the location, is unusual and starkly lovely. I listened on #audio but want to read it agin in print to follow all the separate stories that somehow perfectly wind together in the end. Wow, quite a debut!
