Frankly, the metaphoric content, while apt, got in the way of the story and of my interest in the main character. In "Nervous Conditions" we met a young woman, Tambudzai, who was determined if naive. She didn't quite understand why authority figures in her life seemed to think men more important than women or why race is such a crucial category, but she seemed determined to figure it out and ready to take on anything.
