I listened to this on audio and stayed with it for about one third of the novel. I decided not to finish it because even though the subject matter is so important in US history, there was something lacking for me. I love historical fiction and wanted to learn more about the internment camps and the misuse of so many Americans like I’ve read about in other novels.
I’ve dragged myself through a number of novels in the past few months and just decided not to do it again.

This is another great book by Susan Meissner! This book follows the lives of two friends who were in a containment camp during WWII. Elise and Meriko are both born and raised in America. Their families are from Germany and Japan and suspected of colluding with their homelands. They meet when their families are both interned in a camp in Texas.

This is the second Susan Meissner novel I’ve had the privilege to read this year and it has made a devoted fan of me.
It’s an epic WWII story from an angle you typically don’t see, the German-American side. Elisa Sontag, born and raised in the United States, is forced to live through an internment camp where she finds a connection with another prisoner, who will guide Elise through her life choices when she is sent back to Germany and beyond.
