Even though countless novels and films have grappled with the Pinochet regime’s atrocities, Fernandez still manages to find a way to tell the story in ways that feel fresh. You know how the characters’ situations will turn out, and yet in that moment that she paints for you, you are still stressed and hoping against hope that things will end differently and then you still grieve when they don’t. The insight she provides on human nature is unmatchable.
