As I listened to this beautiful novel by Jillian Cantor on audio, I was transported back in time to war-torn Austria during WWII. Most of the WWII and Holocaust books that I've read are set in Poland or Hungary or Germany, and this is the first that was set in Austria. I'm bagging this. And returning it to Audible. Too much fluff and awkward writing around a promising story. I thought the story would be enough to pull me through but since I don't care for the characters, and the writing is mediocre, just not worth continuing. I gave it 100 pp.

I read this book while on the Polish/Ukrainian border, working with groups evacuating Ukrainian refugees, so it was the perfect read for the moment. I love historicals that reveal something that has not been explored. Jill Cantor's book provided a deep look at the use of forged papers and stamps (!) as means to secret Jews out of Nazi controlled regions. Great, believable characters and plot.
