I highly recommend this novel for its originality and how Millwood-Hargrave creates the long ago fishing village in Norway. I also love the dark and atmospheric writing of Millwood Hargrave, who features strong-ass women. Her prose is unlike any other author. She makes you feel as if you were living there at this moment in time and going through what these women and villagers lived through. 3.5 stars The writing in this book is beautiful. The author does a fantastic job at developing the characters, setting, and the plot. I enjoyed and felt attached to the characters, especially Maren. I loved how the women in the village all learned to rely on each other after the tragedy and work together. I enjoyed the history and learning about this infamous storm and the witch trials that occurred in this region.
The 1600s in the uppermost north of Sweden, Finland, and Norway made for a hard life in a small village on a small island. It's made much harder for the women when a sudden storm on Christmas Eve causes all of the men, on a fishing mission, to be swept up in a sudden storm and drown.
