The fantasy may be in the protagonist Ma Daode’s head but the ‘dystopia’ that the book is set in, is rooted in Xi Jinping’s very real ´China Dream’ inherited from the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It reels brilliantly with the horror of the times, erasure of histories- cultural and personal and moves at breakneck speed. The writing/translation is masterful, the imagery astounding- very highly recommend this book!!
