This was a challenge to read because it didn’t move very quickly, and the relationships between the characters were somewhat ambiguous - in particular the character of Kristin. I couldn’t figure out where she fit in all of this until the very end which was a surprise ending. I didn’t see it coming, but then everything fell into place. A very clever, very sophisticated novel. I can’t say that I liked it a lot, but I certainly appreciated the cleverness.
The central action in this novel is a 24 hour period in the city of Istanbul. However, the novel’s central premise is that the crisis point of a life or relationship is the intersection of many previous actions and reactions in the character’s lives. Catherine, an American woman married to a Turkish businessman, takes her son to her lover’s photography exhibition. They stay late and upon returning home and being confronted by her husband, Catherine decides to flee Turkey with her son and lover.
