It is heartbreaking what people can do to each other.

Before reviewing this book, I want to explain why I picked it up. One of the books I read last year by was Words in the Dust by Trent Reedy. It is a book about Afghanistan. I have read a few about that area. Anyway, it inspired me to look for other books about the Middle East. A solid 4⭐️
What an amazingly complex character, Nahr. She’s a hero and yet we don’t always like her. The poignancy of the everyday lives of Palestinians is captured beautifully as are the efforts of a people trying to survive and keep their cultural fabric alive.
The story pacing is good even if sometimes you get lost in the details but overall the descriptions bring you right next to Nahr and Bilal.
