It's not the book I was expecting to read, but it ended up even better. I share the same birth year as the character, yet our lives as women are very different. What an eye opening book on the "modern" female life in Korea. Although our lives share many similarities, this reminds me, as an American, of how much freedom we have and how stifling life elsewhere could be.

Grim feminism from South Korea. The story mixes faux biography with footnotes giving statistics on women's inequalities. Altogether, there is an interesting alternation of summary and scene. The protagonist Kim Jiyoung's life and life choices are used to illustrate larger social frameworks, mainly frameworks that highlight the limitations of a woman's choices. SOLID read!
At its core, "Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982" follows Kim Jiyoung from childhood to marriage as she navigates "what it means to live as a woman, especially as a mother, in Korea."
I found "Kim Jiyoung" to be both disheartening and enlightening. I learned about feminism from a Korean standpoint and realized that though we have come so far, women still have great lengths to go to achieve true equality worldwide.
