It’s hard to believe that this is Douglas Stuart’s first novel - for a taste of his writing read his New Yorker story (his first published piece!). It is nothing short of astonishing – the language, the characterization, the world – it is, in a word, gallus. Or, in three words, pure dead brilliant. I just finished re-reading it today and I cried my eyes out again laughin and greetin.

At Chapter 2: Listening to this is like watching Law and Order: SVU in reverse, each chapter ends with a harrowing crime and starts with stoic characters.
I only stayed because Angus King read it so well but this was so long and so bleak, the glimmer of hope was 2/3rds into the book and of course, that didn't last.
