Set in Baltimore, this story follows Tess Monaghan, reporter-turned-investigater, as she discovers that all is not it seems when a big tycoon wants to bring a pro-basketball team to the city. When her reporter friend Feeney tells her that the tycoon is having money problems, has a lot of earlier issues, and will sell out to make a lot of money as soon as the pro team comes to town, she decides to investigate. The mystery itself was middle of the road, but Tess is a charming protagonist -- more Stephanie Plum than V.I. Warshawski, but charming all the same -- and Lippman, who's a Baltimore native, writes about Baltimore like a love letter.
