What Members Thought
I didn't think the prose or characters were as rich as in The Underground Railroad. However, the ending was incredibly touching and memorable. I appreciate that he was moved to create Elwood & Turner from the horrific memories of the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, FL.

Colson Whitehead may be the best writer of his generation. Heartbreaking, spare, beautiful; there is not a single unnecessary word or wasted sentence. This story of a boys’ school in the south is filled with unforgettable characters: good, bad, and complicated. This is an American story that should be read by every American so that we can face the reality of our history and do better. I know why this won Whitehead (another!) Pulitzer.
