I love Maile Meloy's writing, but this was a mess. It was a sort-of thriller, and was indeed exciting enough to keep me up late to finish it (or maybe I just wanted to be done). But mostly it was about a really terrifying thing happening to two couples and the toll that takes on their marriages and friendships, and the ways they blamed each other for it. I think there were other meanings in there but I was too annoyed by them all to really understand them.

3.5 stars. Overall very well written, but not a high recommendation for the following reasons 1) the two main characters, moms Liv and Nora, are neurotic and annoying (as I'm sure the author intended) but hard to feel sympathetic towards 2) children in danger always a tough one for me 3) the alternating story of the migrant child, that is suppose to juxtapose the lives of of the privileged Americans versus impoverished and endangered Central Americans, felt clunky.
