I read this for Oregon Battle of the Books. It's definitely for middle school + as there are drug and prostitution references (nothing detailed). Sungju's family goes from privileged military family status in North Korea to being destitute and desperate for food. Sungju eventually lives on the street, banding with other boys to survive. I won't say more about his escape from North Korea, but it's a sad and fascinating story. Highly recommended.
