This was an unexpected gem, found at our small local library while I was re-shelving books. The writing is skilful, and beautifully evokes the feeling of life in Iceland, with its hardships and fierce landscapes, and later in Algiers where there is contrasting warmth and abundance. The book is a re-imagining of a true event from the past, when some of the people in Iceland were taken as slaves.Very few managed to return home, a few didn't want to return, and many died.
