What Members Thought

This was a stunning novel about the true matriarchal world of Korean women divers, the Haenyo, who were the sole supporters of their families in their small village during prewar and postwar times. It discusses the Japanese invasion and how that affected these people and their families. There are romances and babies and matched marriages. There is much pain and death. Theirs was not an easy life and these amazingly strong women not only survived but had families and friendships into present day.

It was very interesting to see how this matrifocal society lived when left to their own devices. Then the huge number of tragedies that were instigated on this society. So sad. A very good book.

This is an unforgettable read and I kept mentioning it to friends and family. I did need a break after the genocide but overall it's a powerful story on resilience, forgiveness, and quiet authority.
