On a small island things are disappearing. At first, it's little things like perfume and ribbons, and, as the objects disappear, so do the islanders' perceptions of them. Gradually, more and more things disappear, big things, important things. I was really drawn to the premise of this book. I love mysterious happenings that border on magical (are unexplained) and reading about how the character manages as, in this case, the disappearances and witch-hunts get more intense. However, I had a few issues. Our main character didn't seem to feel much, and I guess that was the point given that's how everyone reacted to the disappearances, but this didn't make for an engaging read. I only gave this one 3 stars because, while it was really well written, I just found it unrelentingly bleak and I just was not in the mood for that, I guess.
