On a small island things are disappearing. At first, it's little things like perfume and ribbons, and, as the objects disappear, so do the islanders' perceptions of them. I was really drawn to the premise of this book. I love mysterious happenings that border on magical (are unexplained) and reading about how the character manages as, in this case, the disappearances and witch-hunts get more intense. However, I had a few issues. Our main character didn't seem to feel much, and I guess that was the point given that's how everyone reacted to the disappearances, but this didn't make for an engaging read. I only gave this one 3 stars because, while it was really well written, I just found it unrelentingly bleak and I just was not in the mood for that, I guess.
It’s beautiful and it’s haunting. The questions of memory and loss are something I can never quite feel at peace with.
