This was amazing! Ten stars!!

Framed as a mother's (very long) confessional letter to her two young sons, this story spans decades and generations and borders. It hooked me right away from the very first line:

Just realized that I'm harsher on books that have disappointed me.
Me on a formulaic genre book - ⭐⭐⭐
Me on a promising literary book that disappointed me - ⭐⭐

I think it's because they annoyed me and made me hate myself for not DNF-ing.

Pros:
1.Storytelling device of being written as a journal to her kids is unusual and I liked that I wondered if she was glossing over her recollections to impress her kids.

2.I liked learning about Burkina Faso's birth and Thomas Sankara.

The time period is the 1980s. Marie is a young Black woman living in New York who works as an FBI agent. While dealing with family tragedy and the racism and sexism of working in an old white boys club, she takes an undercover assignment with the CIA to get close to the new, charismatic president of Burkina Faso.
