I should have known better. Pat Barker is one of the great literary cons. I enjoyed her first two novels, but she lost with me with the puzzlingly popular Regeneration trilogy. Why not just read the far superior Sassoon?

Similarly, Barker brings nothing insightful or original to this derivative retelling of the Iliad, supposedly from the woman's point of view. The narrator, Briseis, offers up a series of platitudes and banalities regarding her involuntary servitude, and at tedious length. Worst o
