Journalist Svetlana Alexievich interviewed hundreds of people following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident. The government hushed up much of the results of the accident, but we now know that over 485 villages were lost and about 2.1 million people live on contaminated land. Thousands have died and thousands have been born with debilitating birth defects. This is a book of voices, of people speaking up, telling what really happened.

On April 26, 1986 a nuclear accident happened at Chernobyl. Svetlana Alexievich, a journalist, interviewed hundreds of people who were affected by the meltdown. One of the things that really stood out for me is how little was known about what happened at the power station, by those that were most affected. All the books about radiation were removed from libraries. Cleanup workers were given minimal protective gear, if any. The Soviet Union did everything they could to downplay the disaster. Work
