And Connelly knows the LA crime beat, as he wrote about it for years as a journalist. He knows the courtroom, he knows the squad room. And it shows. If I di ...more

This book, more so than the previous Harry Bosch series books, is really getting inside Harry's mind. Very complex and satisfying. And, as always, a good mystery.

Harry Bosch is on suspension from the Hollywood Homicide Division and he has to attend therapy sessions. his house has also been condemned due to an earthquake. Harry decides it's time to investigate the murder of his mother, who was a prostitute, back in 1961. I like the character of Bosch and appreciate the deeper look into his childhood. I thought I had the crime all figured out but the ending threw me for a loop. I look forward to continuing this series.

It seems like my enjoyment of Connelly's work increases with every one of his books that I read - this one is a total knock-out. The storyline drew me in from the beginning, and the final act ends up being even more impressive than I'd anticipated. At this point, I'm convinced enough of his skill as a writer that I'm now thoroughly committed to scarfing down the rest of his work like an 8-year-old on Halloween.

Do I agree with his methods? No, but he's so fascinating though. This might be my favorite so far because of the focus on his mom.
