On the surface, The Friend is about a female writer who inherits a Great Dane from a close friend and mentor who suddenly dies. But this is not a cute story about the lovely friendship between a lonely woman and a sweet giant dog. Or at least it’s not the whole story. The dog is old and sick, the narrator is threatened with eviction (no dogs allowed in her apartment), and she struggles to come to terms with the suicide of her mentor, friend and lover.
