"The Friend" at its most basic form is about a woman, who is also a college professor and fiction writer, who takes in a deceased friend's aging Great Dane. On the surface, The Friend is about a female writer who inherits a Great Dane from a close friend and mentor who suddenly dies. But this is not a cute story about the lovely friendship between a lonely woman and a sweet giant dog. Or at least it’s not the whole story. The dog is old and sick, the narrator is threatened with eviction (no dogs allowed in her apartment), and she struggles to come to terms with the suicide of her mentor, friend and lover.

Autofiction, self-fiction or whatever kind of this genre is usually not at all to my liking. But for some unknown reason (maybe the dog), I liked this novel reasonably enough. It helped me think at various things, which is a good indication of a work of art which deserves praise.
Fiction and literature melded together in stream of consciousness writing. And I liked it. Even if a lot of it was about a dog.
