I was resistant to this one, not believing it could live up to the buzz surrounding it, but it lived every bit of it up to the hype.

This was an amazing book & story. It was so well-crafted and developed. It slowly & surely drew me in, engaging me right to the very end...and what an end it was. There is foreshadowing, but it's subtle and not easy to pick up on with regards to where the story is headed. So well developed. The character of Kya--the "Marsh Girl," was painted in exquisite detail. What a fascinating character who lived a very isolated & solitary life--but a very rich one in her knowledge of the marshlands she live ...more

When I got the message that my copy of Where the Crawdads Sing was available to download from the public library late last night, I knew I should just ignore it until morning.

But, I really wanted to read a little of it. I’d picked the book up at the bookstore this weekend to thumb through, and the first chapter and immediately caught my interest. I wanted to read more about 6 year old Kya going to school for the first time, eager to learn what comes after 29. “Just one chapter,” I promised mysel

I'm glad I hadn't read any of the hype about this book and came upon it without expectations. The story of survival against almost hopeless odds, a girl abandoned by everyone in her immediate family who learns how to keep going in a world that appears to be against her, is amazing. I appreciated the writing, and the descriptions of the natural environment, but the poetry not so much. A small twist at the end brings a wry smile. ...more

Took me a few chapters to get into the story.
I’ve almost decided to not continue but the book had such great reviews that I thought maybe i was just not in the mood. I liked it, but skimmed though some pages.

What I have liked much is when the author expresses Kia’s feelings and describes the feathers 🪶 I can almost see and feel them.

It was an ok read. For sure very far fetched. Engaging enough though. I liked that she found solace in nature & the descriptions of nature. No way would she have the social skills she ended up having. She’d be so effed up in reality!

Lush prose, immersive nature descriptions, compelling main character. There is a murder mystery of sorts but what I remember most vividly is the sense of place: the MC's hut in the swamps of a coastal area in the Southern US, the small-town settlement with its grocers and local dignitaries, the deep loneliness and swelling tides of emotion.

Read as part of Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine Book Club.
