Once again I fall victim to the hype. Also I may hold a grudge that the library books came in when my New Year resolution was to read my own books. Oops.
I loved the exploration of growing up marginalized and isolated in nature. I loved the way the natural world was woven in and all the details about this specific marsh ecosystem. The violence and crime drama / mystery felt like a way to appeal to a mainstream audience that might not stick around for gulls and seashells. I dunno ... I like gulls and seashells. The other stuff felt kinda forced and unsatisfying to me, even though it was well-written.
By far the most mentions of grits I've encountered in a single book. The nature descriptions are lovely. I'd love to read the books described within this book.

I found it a bit predictable and found the romances a bit boring.
