Four stars because this stayed with me for days after reading it. I can't imagine the terror and anguish that would lead parents to leave their child at an apartment building, in the hope she would be cared for and have a chance at life. And yet, miraculously, this worked for them: the parents survived the pogrom, and the daughter was adopted and brought up by a couple who loved her.
