Bookclub books are always a roll of the dice, but it's been a long time since I've disliked one of our selections as much as I hated pretty much every minute I spent reading this one. Like humor, style is hugely a matter of personal preference and connection, and Dillard's style simply didn't work for me at all in this (thankfully) short novel. I enjoy narrative -- and there's virtually none to be found here. I know that plenty of readers found the meditative tone engrossing, but I just found it ...more

I have been in love with the writing of Annie Dillard since i first picked up a boyfriend's An American Childhood and couldn't put it down. That being said, it is probably not all that surprising that i adored The Maytrees, though i often found myself having to reread passages (sometimes for their lyrical qualities, sometimes to make sure i understood them, sometimes because i was pretty sure i didn't understand them in the least... i'm just dense that way...)
