I had read this book several years ago, but didn’t really remember it. I’m glad I went back and reread it. I found it quite charming. Some of the criticism I’ve read is the Flavia isn’t believable as an eleven year old child, but I disagree with that. She might be a little bit more adult than an average child of her age, but I certainly don’t find her unbelievable. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

This book came highly recommended by several people and I really enjoyed it. It blends mystery with social history and a very astute but believable 11 year old narrator. As a mystery fan, I could have wished the mystery plot were a little "tighter" but the story is completely engaging and I will definitely read more from the series.
