I know a lot of reviewers thought this book was something of a slog to get through but I really liked it, as even in the more "teachable" parts her writing is excellent. To be sure, there were some dry spots, but in general this book was a page turner for me.

I should have liked this book more than I did. And I feel guilty writing that- after all the author has my respect. But this book was at times tedious. The 2016 family held my interest, but the 1870's family really didn't, apart from the female scientist; a woman before her time and a real person from history. Many themes intertwine, the collapsing house, the collapsing expectations, our collapsing ecosystems, not to mention the politics with an obvious politician suitably mentioned and despaire

I am going to have to throw this into the "Not finishing" pile. I gave it a good 150 pages, but decided to cut my losses. To put it in perspective I also did not enjoy the Poisonwood Bible (I know that's blasphemy to most!). I found the book tedious and boring. I didn't care about most of the characters, and the characters I did like (mostly in the past storyline) took forever to get anywhere.
