Four nice little stories from Tajikistan, set in and around Dushanbe, interlinked by their overlapping personnel. They read more like factual accounts or memoir snippets than fiction -- which, indeed, perhaps they are. I liked reading about places and events that mean everything to the people living in and through them but about which I know next to nothing. Very specific and at the same time, distressingly universal (civil war, families torn asunder, orphans, refugees, regime change). Not that
