This was just fab. Read it in one day. Beautiful cover, too, by James Nunn. The first magical realist novel I've truly enjoyed since Gabriel Garcia Márquez's A Hundred Years of Solitude 41 years ago. Others have tried; others have failed (to please me with their magical realist efforts).
