A deeply engrossing story, so much so that it carries the reader beyond early difficulties of discerning who is narrating which chapter at its outset (it always takes a paragraph). Brutally violent, no two ways about that.

The scandal surrounding its author cannot be ignored once it is known. While in the past we would hear his voice most clearly in one of the two indigenous characters, now it feels most appropriately assigned to the white Jesuit.
